Everything looks fine in the file, but after binding, the title is misaligned, the text extends onto the fold line, or the entire composition looks uneven. In practice, this is one of the most common reasons for cover corrections before printing.

For a self-publishing author, a company preparing a corporate publication, or someone assembling a guide or album, accurate spine calculation and proper cover preparation are truly crucial. Therefore, simply specifying the number of pages isn't enough; you need to know the specific type of paper used for the book's core. With a glued softcover, an additional layer of glue and the pressure applied to the block itself only slightly affect the final dimensions. Therefore, approximate formulas are helpful, but it's always worth confirming the final value.

The most commonly used method for calculating spine thickness in perfect binding is as follows:

Spine thickness (mm) = (number of pages / 2) × thickness of one sheet in mm

Example: a book has 200 pages and a sheet of 80-90 g offset paper is approximately 0.10-0.11 mm thick.
(200 / 2) × 0.11 = 11 mm.

Another simple method, used for 80g offset paper, assumes that 20 pages (10 sheets) equals approximately 1 mm of block thickness. An additional 1 mm is sometimes added for the cover to obtain an approximate spine width.

It's worth remembering that the number of pages must be even, and the calculations are only approximate. Coated paper is usually thinner for the same grammage, while bulky paper is significantly thicker. The difference can be several millimeters with a higher page count.
